South African anthracite is not true anthracite as in Welsh or Appalachian anthracite. It is bituminous coal that has been altered by the effect of igneous intrusions after the deposition.

It is generally of higher Ash and Volatile content although the volatiles is low enough to make it a quasi- anthracite.

example, welsh anthracite was defined as 4%ash 4%volatiles, whereas SA anthracite is generally 12% ash and around 10% volatiles.

SA Anthracite is useful in the metallurgical market for its high fixed carbon content and the low volatiles make it smokeless.
