Under investigation in Zurich last year by the district attorney, Kennedy was adamant he had no idea where the money had come from or who had paid it into his account. Five years, after all, had passed. The cash, in fact, had been transferred into one of his Swiss bank accounts by Ernst Imfeld, the pudgy Zurich-based head of private banking at Bank Leumi, Israel's second-biggest bank. Imfeld since has confessed to swindling more than $300 million worth of client funds and using it for risky foreign-exchange dealings. It is believedthat up to 400 of the bank's clients have lost money and the first of what may be many legal suits already has been filed.

Unbeknown to Kennedy, the money had been stolen from another client's account. It appears that Rivkin - who may face perjury charges in Australia as a result of his evidence to the Zurich district attorney - also benefited from unauthorised transactions.

One of Rivkin's accounts appears to have profited by 990,000 Swiss francs ($1.054 million) from foreign-exchange transactions he claims he did not authorise. In another odd transaction, a $1 million payment by Rivkin to Manchester United was taken from an unwitting Bank Leumi client, all under Imfeld's instructions.

As both benefited from client transfers, the Zurich district attorney was keen to question them.

As an Israeli bank with operations in Zurich, Bank Leumi has promoted itself as a safe haven for foreign Jewish money.

But it now faces civil action in Israel and Switzerland while a separate case has been launched by aggrieved clients against Israel's financial regulatory authorities, who have been accused of incompetence.

It is not the first time the bank has been in trouble. Three years ago, Israeli MPs began investigating it for its alleged part in stealing the proceeds of Holocaust victims.

It was alleged that in 1954, Bank Leumi opened and emptied bank safes in Israel that had been kept locked since 1938.

Michael Kleiner, a right-wing opposition politician on the parliamentary committee investigating the matter, said at the time he wanted an explanation for the missing assets, believed to include jewellery and gold.

"When we made our [initial] inquiry, [officials at Bank Leumi] did not give us straight answers. They tried to avoid the investigation."

Imfeld, now co-operating with the Zurich district attorney, joined the bank in 1985 and was appointed head of private banking in 1992. He dealt personally with almost half the bank's high-profile clients, including Rivkin, Richardson and Kennedy.

But it now transpires Imfeld was forced to leave his previous job at Credit Suisse Group after irregularities in client accounts.

The latest scandal erupted in 2001 when two of Imfeld's clients asked to see their banking records. According to a report in the New York-based Forward magazine, Imfeld was on holidays and their records were retrieved by another banker. A quick inspection of the accounts revealed most of their money had evaporated.
