If he was a large share holder or part of the IPO (more likely)then may have got options RMIO with shares alternatively he could have bought them on market just as you can sell them on market prior to their expiry date (if there is a buyer) for the amount you are wanting to sell.
Personally if the broker fees are less than the option price times the available amount a buyer is wanting, and I was the executor of an estate I would sell them and at least get something.
(I am not in the market for cheap options)
