"The New York-based Citibank has announced that it will buy Taiwan's Bank of Overseas Chinese for NT$14.1 billion (US$426 million).

The country officer for Citibank Taiwan, Morris Li, said the acquisition is part of its long term growth strategy in Taiwan. He said it will help Citibank delve deeper into the local market and reach a broader base of customers.

Li said the merger is expected to be completed in the second half of this year, with Citibank hoping to reap profits beginning in 2009".
