"Other factors such as where the fatal accidents happen within the urban area are similar for both
types of vehicles, with 50% to 58% occurring away from intersections. Time of day factors for
fatal accidents indicate that near to 80% to 90% of the
urban truck related accidents occur
between the working hours of 6am to 8pm. Most fatal accidents involving trucks happen in lower
speed zones (less than 60 k/h) and the truck is partly or fully responsible for the accident in about
34% of incidents. This would indicate passenger sedan and pedestrian behaviour still needs
considerable modification within the urban environment.
What is also significant is that the urban environment is nowhere the exclusive domain of rigid
truck fatalities. Some 64% of fatalities resulting from rigid truck crashes occur outside urban
areas. Urban articulated truck combinations have increased their numbers and urban travel by
23% and 37% respectively. This has not been reflected in urban articulated fatalities, which have
decreased significantly over the period."

"80% of heavy truck car accidents are caused by the car1. This is fact
as recognised by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau. There are many
factors that contribute to this result, among them the far greater driving
experience of most truck drivers over the average motorist."
