To put it another way:
Yes, as a shareholder I have been diluted.
But I argue that in the absence of those incentivising rewards, the founders would have been underpaid/under-rewarded for their achievements on our behalf - these rewards were approved by us and well deserved.
Startups need incentives to compensate them for their efforts and achievements, and for taking the risk of building a business which if for whatever reasons did not survive, the founders could not only have lost the lot, but be saddled with huge debts too.
