My first foray into share investing ended in disaster with a massively leveraged long/short play in RIO and BHP. It was such a punch to the gut (how could I lose money on such a "genius" idea) that I stopped investing and spent the next few years researching and trying to workout where I had gone wrong.
I like to think my second attempt has been much more successful (or maybe just luckier), but I do know that I would have just ended up in an even bigger mess if it wasn't for my early disaster that forced me to learn. In hindsight the loss was a very cheap lesson.
