The infrastructure part of Telstra should have been retained in public ownership. This should have been done before Telstra was privatised, but the Liberals' ideology got in the way.
It will be too expensive now for the government to buy back those infrastructure assets. What the government can do and should do is to legislate for forced structural separation. Existing Telstra shareholders will own the hived off part as well but it will be a totally separate and independently run company with its own independent board of directors.
