It's not a sudden scientific discovery, but rather a gradual accumulation of evidence through various studies - which has accelerated in the past half decade or so.
It's on google for you to see.
But the issue still remains: if you find that you were wrong on something, isn't it the right thing to do to admit you were wrong?
