re: howard wins next election Kevin Rudd has been elected the new leader of the Labor Party.
Mr Rudd, who challenged Kim Beazley for the top Labor job, won the vote 49-39 in a Caucus room meeting this morning.
Julia Gillard is the new deputy leader, replacing Jenny Macklin. No-one else nominated for the position.
Mr Beazley called the meeting on Friday after Mr Rudd said he would challenge him for the leadership position.
Mr Rudd, 49, will be the third Labor leader since the 2004 election.
He entered Federal Parliament after the 1998 election and joined the frontbench in 2001.
Senator Chris Evans was re-elected as the party's Senate leader, with Stephen Conroy as the deputy.

Glad I placed my bet before this happened.
Got Labor to win at $2.50 with Sportingbet but they will be favourites soon and you will be lucky to get $1.50.
State election results in the federal arena next year.
