It is not rocket science to know that. What high public approval rating does and can do is to maintain the spirits of the troops. It is a bit like someone saying "thank you" to you for a job well done. Of course that does not mean they will continue to say "thank you" when you stumble and make some silly policy mistakes. Just common sense.
Also, it can be quite frustrating for the team on the other side to see the opposing team keep receiving "thank you" card from the public which you are trying to woe over.
I have not missed the fact that most opposition parties and their supporters say public opinion polls don't mean a thing, Labor included when in opposition.
The challenge is to make sure that the public keeps saying "thank you". Sound so simple, doesn't it :-)
