IMHO, the best thing that could be done to the banks is to regulate them a little more, not a lot just enough to encourage real compatition. A few years ago the poms made it possible to completely change banks in about 10mins. You can go in with all your statements from another bank, ask for a better deal sign the paperwork and it's done direct debits and all. this forced the banks to compete or lose customers FAST.
