Not everything a politician says or does is political.
Rudd was asked for his opinion on Hicks. He might as well have been asked for his opinion of what brand of potatoes make the best chips. His answer would still be apolitical. He said so himself. Not my place to comment on it. To put it even more simply, he removed himself from the "political" stance.
