Australia's development of the bionic eye by 2020 is expected to receive a federal government boost of $50.7 million.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will reportedly announce the funding in Perth on Wednesday as part of the government's official response to the 2020 summit.
The Australian Research Council is expected to provide the funds over four years to the organisation that is best placed to build a prototype and commercialise the technology, The West Australian newspaper reports.
In defending the 2020 summit last year, Mr Rudd said developing the bionic eye was one of the main initiatives to come from the talkfest.
"I think the goal, for example, of working towards a bionic eye by 2020 is out there, we have done a bionic ear through Cochlear, we've got great science and technology here, let's set our sights on that and see whether we can reach that."
