The prime minister and his wife Therese Rein spent Sunday morning with more than 3000 dogs at the RSPCA's Million Paws Walk fundraiser in Canberra, and took Abby along for fun.

"Good morning, animal lovers one and all from Abby the dog," Mr Rudd greeted the crowd.

"Animals love us without question.

"The big question for us is, how do we care for animals without question?"

But while Mr Rudd was feeling the love, Abby wasn't.

Already battling to maintain support in the polls, now even the prime minister's best friend is happy to desert him.

The gentle pooch, made anxious by the large crowd and thousands of dogs, took only a few steps of the walk before she was bundled back into the Ford Territory, where she stayed with Ms Rein.

Mr Rudd continued on the walk, looking a little lonely
