Has always been that way even back in the days of Campese, Ella's, Kearns et al when Randwick was the Wallabies (well almost !). Don't think any of the winter "footy" codes will ever dissappear. AFL is too strongly entrenched all over except NSW where it will go up and down according to the Swannies performance. League will never dissappear from NSW or QLD the same as it will never get a strong following in VIC, even if the Storm win 3 titles in a row.
AFL and League seem to be the dominant codes depending on where you live, as illustrated above Rugby sort of gets a look in when the Wallabies are doing well.
Add to that .. that game they play with the round ball is also competing for our hearts and minds,.... won't take off here until we first "kick a few goals" internationally .. then the fair weather friends will jump in for the ride , just like they did and do with the Swannies here in Sydney.. bit like the stock market if you think about it , lol
