Turns out LYC has actively been funding research in Th removal for a number of years, for example:

And in a recent paper 99.86% removal was achieved (not funded by LYC, but is directly targeted to Malaysian REE industry').

If the report is accurate then it would appear the supported research has lead to a discovery giving LYC confidence they can use it in large scale. Perhaps this is the news we should be waiting for rather than outcome of judicial hearing.
