Virgin Blue was never a core component of the TOL business strategy, it was a burden taken on as part of the Patrick Corp takeover (part of the deal they struck).

To offload their stake in VBA the company paid a 'special dividend' to all shareholders last year. TOL stated clearly from the start that they were not interested in remaining a long term holder of VBA and after failing to gain any significant interest for a buyer of TOL's stake the special divvie was decided as best course of action.
