Tesla plans to set up the world's largest battery production facility in Germany 25.11.2020 in automotive industry

Tesla's first European "gigafactory", which is currently under construction in Brandenburg near Berlin, will later produce battery cells in addition to electric cars. At a battery conference organized by the Federal Ministry of Economics, company boss Elon Musk concretized his goals for the German giant factory. Musk said that the US manufacturer plans to build the world's largest battery production facility in Germany to accompany the new electric car production. Tesla wants to set up a production facility for battery cells with a capacity of around 100 gigawatt hours (GWh) per year in Grünheide, Brandenburg. Later, this could even be expanded to 200 or 250 GWh. By way of comparison, Tesla's battery plant "Gigafactory 1", which is operated with Panasonic in the USA, will initially achieve 35 GWh. He is looking forward to the opportunities for Tesla in Europe, said Musk. The European Gigafactory is expected to play a major role in transferring new battery technologies to large-scale production. In September, Tesla presented its own battery cells of type 4680, which are also to be produced in Germany. For this purpose, the company has this year taken over a local mechanical engineering company specializing in such projects. "Many of the advanced production facilities come from Germany and Europe," emphasized Musk. Tesla wants to significantly reduce the price per kilowatt hour so that everyone can afford an electric car. To achieve this, he said, the "machine that builds the machine" must be improved and production made more efficient. The Tesla factory in Brandenburg is welcomed by many, but there are also critics. Some fear environmental damage from the large-scale production facility. Musk assured that the people in the region need not worry. New methods would ensure that environmentally damaging production steps would be eliminated. "You can live right next to the battery factory and don't have to worry about toxic substances," said Musk. He said that the company was developing and operating the new technologies first in the San Francisco region, where the strictest environmental regulations in the USA apply. Musk also commented on an announced electric car specifically for Europe. You need a model that is adapted to the conditions of the market. "I was driving a Model X in Berlin the other day, and we had a lot of trouble finding a parking space where the car would fit," the Tesla boss reported. The planned series for Europe will be based in the compact class and designed in Germany. "There are talented designers and engineers in Europe, and the best people want to be able to work there and implement their own ideas, not just copy something that was designed in California," Musk said.
