Mercedes-Benz teams up with US solid state battery specialist

Mercedes-Benz has teamed up with US-based solid-state battery specialist Factorial Energy to jointly develop next-generation battery technology, with a goal of testing prototype cells as early as next year.

The two companies will collaborate on developing solid-state batteries and work together on integrating them into Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

Specifically, Mercedes and Factorial are aiming to set new standards in the area of energy density which will enable longer vehicle range with shorter charging times.

Solid-State Batteries Promise Electric Car Popularity Boost, But Technical Mountains Await

Solid-state battery technology should be the knight in shining armor for the electric car revolution, as it steps in to slash the cost of batteries and make living with a plug-in car just like an internal combustion engine (ICE) only better.

The trouble is, the timetable for adoption keeps slipping and a mass market-ready product isn’t likely this decade, allowing time for other solutions like fuel cells to make up lost ground.

Solid-state batteries promise fast, ubiquitous charging, and enough power to outrun ICE cars not just in the city, but on the fast lane of highways too on the long-distance race to the summer sun.

Solid-state batteries are a work in progress at the moment and the date for a possible triumphant debut recedes as one problem is solved only to unearth another in a kind of high-tech whack-a-mole game.

From an expected imminent debut, the introduction date for mass markets has receded well past 2030 for many analysts, and this spells trouble for electric cars because they must be truly affordable by then for average wage earners.

After all, by 2030 countries like Britain will have banned the sale of new gasoline and diesel cars, and big manufacturing countries like Germany, France and Italy may well join them, although Germany’s new coalition has held off for now.

If there are no new electric cars costing as much as the cheapest ICE ones – say €10,000 ($11,200) – by 2030, a huge number of people will be excluded from the market causing them much angst as they wait for the bus.

Manufacturers won’t be happy either as their sales are decimated.

Meanwhile, IHS Markit INFO expects European Union battery electric cars to hit 50% of sales by 2030.

In the U.S. the target is 50% of sales to be either all-electric, plug-in hybrid or fuel cells by 2030.

StoreDot develops self-repairing battery cell technology

Israeli battery developer StoreDot says it has developed new self-repairing battery cell technology that is able to regenerate underperforming battery cells while they are in use.

StoreDot, which was founded in 2012, announced on Wednesday that it has developed a new patented technology that identifies underperforming cells and temporarily takes them out of service to fix them, all without the driver becoming aware or experiencing any loss of performance.

Unsurprisingly, StoreDot is reticent to give too much away regarding the ‘how’ of its new technology.

What we do know is that the newly developed system consists of a suite of software algorithms with corresponding hardware that are able to identify a cell or string of cells that are underperforming or overheating and then temporarily disable the problem-cells so as to recondition them back to 100% performance.

StoreDot says this “self-healing” battery cell technology has the potential to play a significant role in prolonging EV battery life and driving range, as well as improving safety by preventing battery overheating or any danger of thermal runaway.

“It’s important for us at StoreDot to encourage the global uptake of electric vehicles, so that we can all live in a cleaner, zero-emissions world,” said Dr Doron Myersdorf, StoreDot CEO.

“This latest patented technology is a unique way of repairing individual cells, or groups or cells, when they are in service is a novel advancement to self-repairing electric vehicles.

“This approach is truly transformative with huge real-world benefits for electric vehicle owners, improving performance, safety and the longevity of their vehicles. It also plays a crucial role in eradicating range-anxiety, which remains the main barrier to electric vehicle ownership.”

StoreDot is also the pioneer of its extreme fast charging (XFC) battery technology for EVs, which can charge cars in as little as 5 minutes.

“This paves the way for the launch of our second-generation, silicon-dominant anode prototype battery for electric vehicles later this year,” Myersdorf said.

“Our team of top scientists has overcome inherent challenges of XFC such as safety, cycle life and swelling by harnessing innovative materials and cell design.

Today’s announcement marks an important milestone, moving XFC for the first time beyond innovation in the lab to a commercially viable product that is scalable for mass production.

    *To Remind,

The global significance of the DRC’s battery metals

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is home to a variety of key metals and minerals, including Copper, Cobalt, Lithium and the 3T’s (tin, tungsten and tantalum), all of which are forecast to see rapid demand increases as the battery metals market grows.

Not only are these minerals abundant in the DRC, but are already being mined or are in the process of development.

Battery production in the DRC could be gamechanger

The Democratic Republic of the Congo could leverage its abundant cobalt resources and hydroelectric power to become a low-cost, low-emissions producer of lithium-ion battery cathode precursor materials.
