Apologies if news from last week's mining indaba in South Africa has been posted; I'm finding it difficult to navigate the different threads and difficult heads.
Did anyone take notice President Felix was there?
He spoke about the DRC playing a role throughout the industrial revolution, with examples of rubber mining for tyres and the uranium for the first atomic bombs. Now the focus is the fight against climate change. He acknowledged the DRC (and Africa) had suffered from bad governance and the people not benefitting from the mineral abundance.
The US Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy and the Environment gave a keynote speech centred on the minerals security partnership (MSP) and ESG: https://www.state.gov/under-secretary-jose-w-fernandezs-keynote-remarks-at-indaba-mining-conference/
Key points that stood out for me:
The wheels turn slowly, but it seems to me Felix and the West / MSP are talking the same language, and for the DRC battery industry plans to gain support from the US and its partners, clear demonstration of good governance will have to precede it - i.e. resolve the mining and exploration rights in the world's largest lithium project in favour of that entity that has acted properly in its development and in the DRC's people's interests; or consign yourself to decades more of exploitation by dark powers.
