On April 12th the Democratic Republic of the Congo unveiled its new cabinet, which was proposed by the president, Felix Tshisekedi, in consultation with the prime minister, Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde.AnalysisThe cabinet, of 56 members (excluding the prime minister), is slightly downsized from the previous cabinet, which had 65 members. It is composed of 31 ministers, 11 vice-ministers, 9 ministers of state, 4 deputy prime ministers and 1 delegated minister.
The new cabinet is a stark departure from its predecessor as it cements the president's power and in effect ends the influence on policy making of Joseph Kabila, his predecessor and former coalition partner. Mr Lukonde has completed a mammoth task for MrTshisekedi by putting an end to the political limbo that was created in December 2020 when the president terminated the previous governing alliance with Mr Kabila to form the Sacred Union, a new governing coalition consisting of 24 political groups and including 391 out of 500 members
