Yep good potential angle there on the short, instos borrow from index funds after the rebalance who are forced to buy (see the vanguard substantial holder report - they offer index fund products while other holders listed on that report provide custodial services), sell at a premium to retail, buy back cheap and return to the index fund. Not buying for keeps.
