The market wizard series are great - the more recent one a pretty interesting view into more contemporary data driven approaches. I didn't appreciate the fact that pretty much everyone interviewed in that series spoke of the primary goal of not losing money. Tom Basso (also in one of the market wizard books) has written extensively on this and uses pretty simple momentum and mean reversion strategies with hedges based around correlation. You might like his book The All Weather Trader.
