Nice connection and you may well be right - WD did acquire Sandisk but they retained their individual operating entities and staffing as I understand it - as such product development and patent protections still drop under sandisk banner so a search across patent scope in WIPO will revel their activity and progression in the space - i suspect they are in the market place already just under the radar as the patent schedule is extensive across a significant time horizon
