EU and NATO are different concepts but the overlap is considerable. The Ukraine as an EU member would see the eastern EU border become the border with Russia. Politically, it could be argued as a defensive measure as was the defence shield idea for Poland and Czech in 2007.
Without Crimea and the previous government uninstalled, you would have to think that the new Ukraine may be a little more amenable to NATO membership. IMO, whether or not Ukraine joins the EU will be a function of how the EU reacts to the security threat on its eastern border. Unless, as seems likely, Russia acts first.
