Straight from Wiki as it seems the source of history your most familiar with and like to refer to.

It seems that needs to be underlined as you are completely ignoring fact that USSR was centralised controlled by Moscow - Russia.

Moscow (Russia) was the central control of the USSR. It was Russia that US defeated in the Cold War, all of the republics quickly folded once that happened and left Russia's central control as soon as they could, fact.

Also a fact that the Russian government didn't expect all of the republic to fold as fast as they did and abandon Moscow.
