The EU & USA hold about US $300b of Russian assets (bonds, currencies, & other assets etc.), which have been frozen since Russia's brutal invasion of Ukraine.

There have been much discussions, & general agreement, in Europe, UK, USA, Japan, Canada, Australia etc. that these funds should be claimed, to assist Ukraine to defend itself; & to help Ukraine rebuild itself after the massive damage (including 2m+ artillery shells fired by Russia, & perhaps c. 750k+ shells fired by Ukraine on its own land, against Russia, & thousands of missiles, rockets, glide bombs & other ordinance) it has sustained- to rebuild Ukraine after the war is over.

As yet, however, there is no unanimous agreement amongst European countries etc.as to how this UU $300b will be claimed, & used. It appears a consensus is slowly being reached.

The amount of steel used to rebuild housing, bridges, dams, factories, & general infrastructure will be HUGE. Whilst it is very tragic & sad for the many victims, & other millions affected, in Ukraine, it will lead to a massive increase in steel- & the concomitant met coal demand.
This bodes, eventually, well for WHC- Australia's biggest ASX-listed met coal company from 1.4.24.

The Guardian A. Roth 2.4.24 said

"A new Ukrainian war damage claims system was formally launched at The Hague on Tuesday during a conference bringing together senior ministers and officials from Ukraine, the Netherlands and European institutions
    .

The register of damages for Ukraine will allow millions of Ukrainians to file claims for the loss and damage of property caused by Russia’s aggressive war. The initial launch is meant to allow Ukrainians to file claims for the loss or damage of residential property, and 300,000 to 600,000 claims are expected. The total number of claims could eventually reach 10M (my emphases)

“This is the first material step that is being made,” the Ukrainian foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, told reporters during the conference. “It’s extremely important that we met here today, not just to discuss how we will be bringing Russia to account but also launching a very specific procedure that every Ukrainian who has suffered can benefit from.”

The Dutch foreign minister, Hanke Bruins Slot, said the war had resulted in a “long and well-documented list of international crimes. Over 100,000 and counting. “That number not only underscores the gravity of this aggression, but also the need to support Ukraine,” she said. “Because if we don’t, the country’s justice system will eventually collapse under the weight of these atrocities.”
