that was before last millennium. miners are always better paid than average workers in China for obvious reasons.
nowadays nobody's going to work for you for just few hundred dollars. of course there will be some odd ones
ie fugitives because they don't have proper ID can't get any proper jobs.
it is not logical as you said Chinese are poorly paid but so many of them went around the world buying properties and splash cash on their holidays, luxury designer label gifts, study abroad, luxury cars....
Lamborghini sold 8405 cars last year 935 of them were to China second to America. of course not to the poor miners but they are as bad as you said......
for example YAN KUONG ( yal in China) first year miner underground start from ¥10000一¥15000 roughly about $2200 on the books 40 hours a week (actual time under the ground) unlimited hours days of overtime (forced if necessary) will pay by cash (much higher rate)
so as a first-time miner you may get ¥150'000-300'000/ year if you work hard enough.
as my parents, both 60 years of heart surgeon, medical professor, ward director, in the best hospital in Shanghai put everything all together gets about ¥250'000/year each.
