That's a rubbish argument. A better argument is the creation of the United States itself. The colonies belonged to Great Britain. The colonials wanted to go it alone for various reasons. They had a war, won, and the rest is history, therefore as long as the US claims that they were legitimate in gaining independence from Britain everyone else has the same right.
