The company HAS completed its process design work at the end of December, allowing the company to commence tendering the major equipment parcels for the demonstration plant.

Mincore and LMG have awarded early site works for fencing, surveying, the reinstatement of electrical works and the refurbishment of the administration building at 320 Tramway Road and all these works have now been completed. Mincore has been progressing the design and engineering work and the detailed process and flowsheet work. In the last week, Mincore has gone to the market and is tendering the smelter works to five pre-approved companies.

China Supply
On 17 September 2021, the Chinese authorities ordered the closure of 18 magnesium plants in Shaanxi and 30 other plants capacity was reduced to 50% capacity from 17 September to end of December 2021. Shaanxi produces approx. 65% of the World’s production. This meant that the supply of magnesium to the rest of the World was severely restricted.

The IMA advised its members on 14 January 2021 that “China’s domestic primary magnesium industry has entered a period of structural change, driven by the strict implementation of government policies aimed at achieving the country’s ‘Dual Carbon Policy’ targets of peak carbon emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. As a major emitter of carbon dioxide (Scope 1 plus Scope 2), China’s magnesium industry will not escape scrutiny.

China’s energy policy rollout is forecast to have significant short, medium and long-term implications for the magnesium industry, with some early signs of change already apparent. Forced outages, higher electricity tariffs and higher raw materials costs have already hit the industry hard over the past year, mostly as a direct result of energy policy implementation. World markets have responded with increasing levels of supply uncertainty and significantly higher levels of price volatility.”

Owing to the Chinese situation, LMG has brought forward the development of its 100,000 tpa plant using ferro nickel slag as its feedstock.
