Well I think today most people see the definition of the west as that described in wikipedia. The idea of the USSR facing the west was a reality of the cold war, a bit latter than the siege of Starlingrad. I think if you say to day that Russia was facing the west in WW2 people would think it wrong or an exaggeration. Russia recieved plenty of western help against Hitler.
