let me explain something to you ...Russia is a country in the east
Ukraine is a completely separate country
russia has no right to be in Ukraine or to tell Ukraine what to do about anything - none of their business
The UN has gas established the truth of that and the vast majority of the worlds nations have condemned russia .
Only N K orea alone has recognised russia riught to annex Ukrainian land ---- only one country !

but not to do with that , not to do with the US either
unless you are very naive it's about three things :
1. showing russian power
2. asserting control over Ukraine
3. stealing russian land

Putin ghas completely and irreparably stuffed up the first two so he's working on the conslation prize of number three .
