The Russian way seems to be the hard way with artillery duels and slow pushes in the fortified cities of Donbass but it would be difficult to achieve lasting peace afterwards if they went in with tac nukes and flattening all of Ukraines cities from the get go. I think they are steadily increasing the pressure on Kiev. The attacks on Power infrastructure started in October. The Gas supply and transit payments between Russia and Ukraine continue though - business is business.

The Ukraine is rapidly consuming all of NATOs munitions and equiment and the Russians have an advantage there if they hold off on a major offensive till summer how much Ukraine opposition can there be without adequate resupply? Diminished Ukraine defensive capability over time puts them at a disadvantage but both sides need to wait till the ground dries out before either side will launch any meaningful offensive. Small scale tactical push maybe in Spring.
