Following the 2014 coup in Ukraine, parliament abolished a law that permitted the use of the Russian language,

    this is absolutely untrue !
many primary xchools still teach in russian medium and russian can be used in courts if the defendant can't speak Ukrainian or if both parties agree
russian is till spoken widely in the community and there is no restriction on that AT ALL !
Some lectures are given in russian and Hungarian in uni's
it's just that Ukrainian is the official language and used as such

a lot of hypocrisy here --- over 20% of russians are NOT ethnic russians
    other languages abound
BUT russina is russias only official language
in russian schools a max of 2 hours per week (optional) of other languages may be spoken
and russian must be spoken in courts

So russia has stricter rules about the use of it's official language than Ukraine has
