I dont disagree. Unfortunately that desire to align with NATO will have some unfortunate consequences. As much as in an ideal world there would be no negative consequences to any political decision ever..... here in the real world that is rarely the case.

Nobody took Russia seriously when they warned NATO about eastward expansion.

Ukraine will suffer terribly as a buffer state sadly. Investment money will be risky and private money will likely avoid Ukraine investment on sovereign risk basis and local oligarchs will move investment offshore but Ukraine can give all the gold they mine to the USA for some Javelins and MANPADS and 2nd hand humvees.
