    When Russia goes on the offensive, a la Bakhmut, Severodonetsk, it is indeed war of attrition, exchanging lives by the hundred for gains by the metre.

    When Ukraine goes on the offensive, a la Kherson, Kharkiv, thousands of square kilometres fall in weeks.

    Russians call plodding 'attrition', and defeat 'cunning ruse/goodwill gesture/strategic withdrawal'.
