well the difference between Afghanistan and Ukraine is Afghanistan was a matter of fighting some undersupplied Muhujidin whereas in Ukraine russia are actually fighting a regular army with modern equipment .

This is a very hot war with prolonged battles instead of occasional skirmishes .
