When the US themselves invaded Afghanistan the most well funded and powerful military power in history spent 20 years in occupation and achieved absolutely nothing ending in an embarrassingly chaotic exit. From my knowledge during the 20 year occupation the Russians were not flooding the Taliban with weaponary to fight the US.
