What we have always seen in the world is changing balances of power , emerging powers , waning powers and changing alliances ......so the rise of China , the loose alliance of BRICS , the decline of russia are really nothing unique in the context of history .
Also as oil and fossil fuels declines we suddenly see less interest in the middle east and more in the far east .
But what we have seen since WW2 is a decline in absolute deaths from warfare and a strong decline per head of population .
This IS new to the planet .
Nowhere is this more evident than in western Europe - traditionaly about the most warlike region of the world but since ww2 completely devoid of war.
The rules and order of the EU and the level of co-operation between countries have enabled a new order .
This is something to be encouraged , strongly encouraged IMO .
Russias attempt at conquest in Ukraine -( please don't pretend it is anything but that )- is at odds with this trend and a line must be drawn in the sand and this must not be allowed to succeed .
If successful it would be repeated by russia and likely by China - if unsuccessful , likely not .
The old saying of ,"the only thing needed for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing " also applies to nations .
If boundaries are respected and wars at least minimised then we can concentrate on some more important issues ....there are a few .
To enable that is not to be weak and avoid war by giving in to the aggressor ....but by finishing the war properly and making sure there is due penalty to disincentavise any country trying a repeat .
IMO
