That is kind of a pointless comment as they were invited to join as well as Georgia which started the war there a while back. The day after Putin warned they will never accept Ukraine joining Nato maybe last year Stoltenburg made a statement in media that they will one day become a member of Nato. Even if you believe Ukraine is no threat to Russia but having Nato and US tactical missiles in Ukraine pointed at Russia or US warships parking in Crimea certainly will be. Do you think Mexico would be a threat to the US if Russia or China had a military coalition and filled the place with missiles pointed at the US? Should Russia put missiles back in Cuba as Cuba is no threat surely?
