We know that the almost spiritual connection between Russia and Ukraine ran deep. That connection was severed by Putin's hero (Stalin) between 1932 and 1933. Stalin used a forced famine (Holodomor) to murder millions of women, men and children.

Putin's actions have opened old wounds that can't now be patched with bandaids.

And yes there is the good cop / bad cop game being played. My guess is that Germany must take the role of good cop due to its WW2 history.
