Putin 'unlikely' to meet military recruitment target - despite offering big salaries

Junior ranks of Russian soldiers are earning almost three times the country's average salary, the UK's Ministry of Defence has said.

These troops are now on more than 200,000 rubles per month - around 2.7 times the Russian average salary.

"By way of comparison, 2.7 times the average UK salary would equate to over £90,000 a year," the MoD said.

At the start of the invasion, Putin noted that a lieutenant received 81,200 rubles per month. But by October 2022, he announced that even mobilised private soldiers would receive 195,000 rubles per month.

The MoD said the salary and "additional benefits" are a "strong incentive" to sign up to fight in Ukraine.

But it added: "Russia is still unlikely to meet its targets for recruiting volunteers to the ranks."
