Wagner forces used convicts to breach defences. the core troops were better trained and equipped soldiers (compared to rest of russian army and some Ukrainian troops) but Yegeny received a lot of soldiers from Russians prisons which were used to storm Ukrainian defences positions. They were badly equipped, with almost zero training and they were expandable. That resulted in a lot of manpower losses but at also protected their better troops from high risks actions.
