I think you will find they had an expensive lesson in Kabul and that was a friendly Govt aligned to Moscow at the time. My casual knowledge suggests the best part is in the East which they have annexed being majority ethnic Russians.

This has always been a war of attrition but most likely like all plans and expectations, Putin didn't think NATO could be so intimately involved. There are just too many moving parts external to Moscow from BRICS, EU economies, AFRICA sliding francophone influence, Taiwan and so forth to make predictions near impossible.
