It has reached a point where how this has escalated is now irrelevant. We can't predict the future or what Putin think Ukraine would have done in his own mind. He chose to invade and Ukraine is defending their country but given his rant about how Ukraine is a Neo-Nazi regime and they must be stopped is laughable as they are a sovereign democratic country who voted for a Jewish President in a fair election instead of a Pro Russian Putin "puppet". So I wouldn't trust what Putin has been saying particularly even his own citizen don't which is telling.
