Zelenskyy seeks arms to get through winter as US vows to support Ukraine for 'as long as it takes'

We reported earlier that Volodymyr Zelenskyy had arrived in Brussels for NATO meetings with alliance defence ministers (see post at 8.37am).

Since then, the Ukrainian leader has spoken to reporters and urged Western allies for help his country through another wartime winter.

"We are preparing, we are ready. Now we need some support from the leaders," he told reporters.

Standing alongside Mr Zelenskyy, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Vladimir Putin was "preparing once again to use winter as a weapon of war" by attacking energy infrastructure in Ukraine.

He said: "We need to prevent that, with more advanced and increased capabilities for air defence, we can make a big difference."

In the last few moments, the US defence secretary Lloyd Austin has confirmed that Washington will support Ukraine for as long as it takes.

"We're here to dig deep to meet Ukraine's most urgent needs - especially for air defence and ammunition," Mr Austin said.
