'Unlikely' winter conditions will stop fighting in Ukraine

It is "unlikely" that the cold winter conditions will stop fighting in Ukraine, a former British military commander has said.

Asked if the fighting could end soon due to the winter, major general Rupert Jones told Sky News both sides had shown they were "happy to fight all the way through".

He said: "As the rain comes and it gets a bit muddy it is harder for vehicles to move around - soldiers can still move around with some degree of impunity.

"At some point the ground then freezes and you might get a slight slow down while the ground is very muddy but the Ukrainians and the Russians have demonstrated over the last year that they are pretty happy to fight all the way through."

He also said it had "all gone a bit quiet in Ukraine" but the Russians had "mounted their biggest offensive this year".

In the Donetsk area the troops were mounting attacks and while they were not making much headway they were making a "concerted push".
