Mexico has a nuanced variation to the US on Ukraine and is less antagonistic to russia and not willing to send any arms to Ukraine - their choice !
No sanctions from Mexico to russia and they invited a russian rep to their independance day celebrations describing russia as a freind .
I haven't detected thje least presssure from the US over this ...have you ?
(and your hypotheticals are just that - imagining !)
But trying to have some sort of sphere of influence ......and invading another country with the intent to conquer it and absorb it into your own country are two very different things .
The other thing to bear in mind is the US is the greatest economy and the leading military power in the world ......and russia is only the 11th biggest economy in the world and the fourth biggest in Europe with not a very effective military .....even f there were still such things as "spheres of influence " ,(I don't believe there is anymore)....how the hell do russia qualify for one ?????
russia isn't "special" at all !
Clearly Ukraine are opting OUT of that ....as is their absolute right and IMO very sensible too !

Let us be clear. The Monroe Doctrine is not ancient history. As
recently as 2018, Donald Trump's Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson,
called the Monroe Doctrine ``as relevant today as it was the day it was
written.''
In 2019, former Trump National Security Advisor, John Bolton,
declared ``the Monroe Doctrine is alive and well.''
