you are conflating political with economic decisions

econommicaly the decision may have been poor
politically it was sound - removes a reliance on a rogue state .....to continue using the gas would've been making Germany accepting of the invasion and annexation of Ukraine and Germany weren't prepared to do that .

Germany had the intention of decreasing fossil fuel reliance anyway - whether you agree with that or not was happening - so this makes things awkward short term but is just speeding that process

Bottom line ....these are decisions for Germany to make and the government will face the people over their management at the next election - that's true democracy for you ....not re-electing putin term after term even when it's illegal to do that .....just get the law changed to allow it !
